LASER MEASUREMENT SYSTEM FOR ROLLING STOCK WHEELS

LASER MEASUREMENT SYSTEM FOR ROLLING STOCK WHEELS

The laser measurement system is designed for wheel measurement in depots at the maximum speed of 10 km/h. The wheel geometry parameters are determined based on the wheel tread profiles reproduced from the measurement data. The measured wheel profile parameters include the entire wheel tread profile, flange height Sh, flange width Sw, slope qR, wheel diameter D, and back-to-back distance Az. Railway cars' or tram wheels may be measured - according to the Customer's requirements.

The measurement system is fully autonomous and contactless. Therefore it has no wearable parts. Solutions were employed to ensure the required climatic conditions to the measurement system elements, protecting them from getting soiled and from mechanical damages. The measurement system transfers information on wheels' defects in real time and may be optionally equipped with the train speed measuring system, displaying this value. The measurement results may be used by the underfloor lathe system.

Optionally, one can identify particular cars after mounting the RF/ID tags on them; this way all measurement results may be assigned to the appropriate wheels for further analyses and reporting

The measurement system provides the full wheel tread profile, regardless of the wheel location during the measurement. Therefore, it has the following advantages:
  • All profile defects and wear types are visible on the full transverse section of the wheel tread profile
  • All profile wear parameters are determined corresponding fully to their geometrical definitions
  • Wheel diameter is determined on the required plane, in respect to the wheel face

Example of employing the measurement results for planning of machining of the tram wheel on the under-floor lathe
